Can you blog on a budget?

Having a blog and keeping it up to date with good quality photos, new products, and your own domain can cost a lot of money. But this might not be necessary – there’s a lot of different ways to “save” money on your blog and prioritize your spendings. Some bloggers won’t think twice about investing into their blog at any time, whether it’s a new computer, a new camera or a custom blog design but don’t worry – blogging on a budget can easily be done.

I sat down and made a list of all the blog-related things I spend money on – and honestly, I was surprised about how short it was! I realized that I’m hardly spending anything on my blog besides my own domain name.
So here’s my list of things to keep your blog-spendings to a minimum:

You can easily go out and spend money on an expensive camera and get some amazing photos for your blog but honestly, I don’t have the money for that kind of investments so I use my iPhone 6s+. Not only do I use it for taking photos but I use it for literally everything regarding my blog: writing blog posts, running my social media accounts, taking and editing my photos. I’m still figuring out how to take the best photos using my iPhone and how to edit them as well but so far I don’t feel the need to buy a professional camera.

A lot of bloggers can’t live without their cameras and I will admit you can get better and more high-quality photos but I just find using my phone more convenient since I always have it on me. Beeing able to take a photo, edit and upload it within minutes is the best! Using my phone is perfect and suitable for me and my blog and is a great way to start out with blogging.

There’s a ton of editing programs and apps – as I mentioned, I edit all my photos on my phone using different apps. If you’re willing to spend money on Photoshop and spend time on learning how to use it, then go ahead! I personally have no clue about how it works and I don’t want to spend my money on something that I might not be able to use… But seeing other bloggers creating amazing and beautiful photos using Photoshop makes me somewhat jealous – but I just know I don’t have the patience for that 🙂

I use the app VSCO – if you haven’t tried this app before you should download it immediately! There are so many ways to edit your photos using this app, there are so many filters but also editing tools like changing the exposure, tint, fade and so many others. I’m yet to find an app like this one and it’s actually all I use for editing.

My blog’s design and appearance is something I change a lot – I use WordPress and there’s a lot of different templates to choose from and I always find one that’s free. I read a lot of different blogs and I’ve found that many use templates from pipdig and they have a lot of beautiful designs but they cost around 40-60€… And spending money on this is definitely not necessary since there are so many free templates you can use. My plan is to use the WordPress themes until my blog needs a new look, a “professional” design is definitely the next thing on my list to buy – when it comes to blog features.

Writing different posts about different subjects made me think I should go out and buy new things to write about but I soon realized that is not necessary. I own a lot of makeup, a lot of homemade/DIY things, I often visit cultural events and I love to cook – sitting down and writing a list of all the things I could write about gave me so much motivation and inspiration. All I had to do was look around me and find something to review, create, cook or even just share my thoughts on. But of course I buy new things sometimes but not more than before I started blogging – now my regular “hauls” and my monthly subscription box’s becomes blog posts.

So if you’re thinking about starting a blog (go for it!) but you’re unsure if you have the money for it, then don’t worry. A blog doesn’t necessarily mean investing loads of money on cameras, blog designs or products – all you need is motivation!

  1. I completely agree, blogging on a budget isn’t too hard, the only thing I struggle with is keeping up to date with style and feel I do spend a lot on new clothes to try and keep up with it, I guess I’ll just have to learn to style posts that people can still relate and see as up to date with out spending so much!

    1. I struggle with that as well – I feel the need to buy new clothes and makeup all the time just to keep up with the newest trends… But I try to select a few items to add to my collections and incorporate them with what I already own – therefore I spend less and get more use out of the things I buy.

Building a mailing list like you are is so important too, I think people would really like to be signed up to what you have to share.

Good job on the social buttons, social media is so powerful these days

You should consider installing an SEO plugin like Yoast or something, theres loads of good free ones.

    Keep making great stuff!

  4. I have been blogging for over a year on a budget and I feel as though as long as you have a passion and a love for what you are doing, you will find a way around these things 🙂 For my photo editing, I always use the Instagram app and then save the photos from there. Great post by the way!
